[SOLVED] Kernel >= 3.6.5 boot failure

Kernel 3.6.5 and 3.6.6 fail to boot (they don't reach init). My setup is prohibitively difficult to debug (custom kernel with all debugging turned off, direct efistub booting) and I don't really have the time to make it debuggable at the moment. However, others (https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 3#p1185863, https://lwn.net/Articles/522320/) have noted what appears to be the same problem so I have started this thread in order to hopefully collect enough details to report a bug.

Hardware/setup: https://gist.github.com/4026650

Updating the efi entry (and signature) changed nothing.

Interestingly, appending verbose to the boot params produced no output. This may indicate a graphics problem instead of a the USB initialization problem experienced by the lwn reader.

Re: [SOLVED] Kernel >= 3.6.5 boot failure

If you applied the wiki steps which are about initcpio hooks to update kernel files in /boot/efi directory that would be happened. The hook doesnt work anymore and you must edit the hook that updates vmlinuz-arch.efi.Last week i experienced a similar problem fortunately i've discovered the error. For doin this work you can simply install grub-efi

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I don't have an initramfs and my custom kernel package directly updates the efi file. This is (almost) definitely a kernel bug and unlikely to be a configuration problem. I am just looking for others experiencing the problem and information about potential patches.

Re: [SOLVED] Kernel >= 3.6.5 boot failure

As of kernel 3.6.7, this bug (if there really was one in the first place) appears to have been resolved.
