Testing login manager configuration without logging in/out.

Is there any way to test the configuration of a login manager without logging in/out to test it? I've tried looking into things like Xnest and Xephyr but none of those seem to be able to do what I want, is there any way to do this? The login manager I'm using is lxdm.

Would running another instance on a separate tty count?

How would I do that? I tried going to another tty and running

# lxdm

and it didn't do anything.

I don't think that's what I need. I want to be able to see the login screen so I can test configuring its appearance and such.
