Xorg refuses to start on HP Pavilion g6 with Radeon HD7600M GPU

Ever since I switched to my new laptop, I've been unable to get xorg to work. I've followed all the instructions here:

The beginner's guide
Xorg configuration
Display drivers: ATI

Here is the output of

lspci | grep -in vga

The error in the log after running startx is identical except the last part says "unable to open display" instead. Could you guys give me any pointers as to what might have gone wrong. My previous installation of Arch worked perfectly on my old system and I've been banging my head against the wall to fix this problem.
