X.org & ati display problem

Hi,

I have a problem with x.org (and ati I suppose)

The problem is the following: my display freezes sometimes when I'm just working.
So when for example I type this text sometimes the characters stop appearing smoothly, and then a whole bunch of characters appear.
When I keep a letter pressed, it also stops sometimes and then resumes with a whole bunch of characters.
When I run glxgears, the wheels sometimes stop rotating for half a second and then resume.
Viewing a movie is horrible, xine complains that he's having too much dropped frames.

I hope this makes clear what my problem is.  I don't have the problem with the characters when I'm not in X, so it's an X or ati problem.

I'm using X.org and kde from testing.
Also the latest kernel from testing (but the kernel from base gave the same problem)
I installed the ati drivers with the graphical installer from their site (I'm only using archlinux for some weeks), and it worked nice without any further tweaks (glxgears is running at 3000fps)

I have gentoo on this box which doesn't have the problem, so my hardware is working nice, I think it's a driver problem.

Can anyone help me?
my setup:
Asus a7n8x deluxe
Athlon xp 2500+
ati radeon 9600pro

thanks!

Re: X.org & ati display problem

glxgears isn't significant with ati boards, that's why you have to try fgl_glxgears. Are you sure that acceleration is enabled?

Also, post the part of your xorg.conf related to the video card, maybe there's some strange setting.

Re: X.org & ati display problem

hmm corrected a typo: glxgears runs at about 3000fps, not 300fps
fgl_glxgears:

[21:16][tom@mouse256:~]$ fgl_glxgears
2340 frames in 5.0 seconds = 468.000 FPS
2890 frames in 5.0 seconds = 578.000 FPS
2765 frames in 5.0 seconds = 553.000 FPS

acceleration must be enabled, fgl_glxgears otherwise won't work. (and glxgears gives a much lower result)

Re: X.org & ati display problem

Oh, ok, that 300 looked very suspicious to me smile

The only thing I can think of is trying to change some settings that could affect your performances very much, like UseInternalAGPGART and VideoOverlay...

The gentoo box you're talking about, is it the same machine dual booting, same hardware but different machine or two completely different things?

Re: X.org & ati display problem

That's a well known problem with ati drivers + kde, i've had it with the last ati drivers too, i've solved it replacing the latest ati drivers with the older version (8.14.13). That's the only thing u can do waiting for the new ati drivers release that should be in october if i'm not wrong.

Re: X.org & ati display problem

@bardo: it's the same machine dual booting (but I switched to arch because of the compile times)

I will try some things and let you know, and also the older drivers (the gentoo is still using older drivers...)

Re: X.org & ati display problem

Hmm, I'm getting nuts of it...

I tried to change internalagpgart, it made my framerate in glxgears somewhat higher, but the problem still is here.
Changing the videooverlay gave no visible changes.

So I tried the older driver (14.13), no luck, still the problem.
I tried to compile my own kernel using the .config file from gentoo, also no luck.
I also tried kernel 2.6.11 (because i'm still using this kernel on the gentoo box and the wiki for the ati driver says there changed something for the ati driver in the 2.6.12 kernel), but also no luck.

I wanted to try even an older driver (8.12.10), but I can't find the installer, only the rpm's, can anyone help me to these? I'm still using these drivers on my gentoo box...

Re: X.org & ati display problem

Okay, I found a solution (or at least a workaround)

I'm now using gnome (latest version from testing) instead of kde, and now no more problems, even movies are playing smooth :-p

so it's a kde problem, maybe I will try to fix it another time...
