I've got Xorg installed, and KDE. These both work fine for regular users. I decided to put Gnome on the box and play with it, and it loads fine for root. When I log in as a regular user and try to start Gnome, it comes up with an ugly desktop, a splash screen, then just an X for the mouse on the ugly desktop.
I'm assuming this must be a permissions problem, but I'm not sure what needs to be changed. I checked out the gnome and kde directories, and everything seems to be owned by root, so I know I'm missing something somewhere.
If permissions, what needs to be changed? If not, then what?

Your probably right that it's a permissions issue. I had a somewhat similar problem with functionality not working for Xfce4 when I wasn't logged in as root. It turned out to be permissions were incorrectly set for some hidden folders under my home directory. The original thread might give you some ideas of what to look for...unfortunately I can't be much more help than that, as I don't use Gnome.

just to confirm, im also having this issue aswell.
If i login as root, It runs fine.
but as other users i get Xkb errors and a desktop with desktop icons, but they all have the "document" icon, the top panel has nothing, etc etc etc..
ill get back to you if i find out whats wrong

I did a "startx" and ran "gnome-session" from an xterm.
But the only errors i got were from gconf complaining that the number of desktops wasnt a valid number, I assume because value didnt exist.
strange....
[edit] ill try out the deleting .cache / .config, etc re: your other thread when i get home.. heh.. oops [/edit]

just to confirm, the method you describe in your other thread does not fix the problem.

maybe the 2.12 upgrade will help

I've upgraded to gnome 2.12, it still doesn't load
As it _tries_ to load, it brings up a message box saying "gnome-settings-handler could not be started" or something to that effect, which basically means nothing can run.
I tried deleting /tmp, didn't work.
I'm getting _really_ frustrated
I dont want to go back to XFCE (I dont want to open another terminal just to eject my dvd drive ever again), and I'm getting insanely sick of KDE.. it's just un-usable..
Sorry if anyone out there likes KDE.. no offence.. but I just find it un-usable..

I have a similar problem as you guys, my problem was actually, i can log in, but nothing loads, you only see a screen with blue background, no icons, nothing. i got it fixed by changing the permission in /tmp to allow other group write option.

I saw gtk-qt-engine jinxing my gnome, too.
Removed every singe gnome folder out of my home dir, and then it worked, as far as I remember. I never tried to use this alien again.

sorry, i forgot to add this.
One strange thing is that whenever i log out of kde, it crash, but still logout eventually, i don't know why, i have no problem with operating and logging into kde. and not a single problem with gnome.
