Hi guys.
after an update (don't know exactly which one, but approximately in the last 2 months) i have my laptop fun always running at mid speed (not the slowest speed, not the fastest, the mid range).
my laptop is an acer 5920g, and the fan used to work great (start spinning faster after CPU reached 50°C and slowing down again below that themperature).
i have the cpufreq correctly set up AFAIK:
# cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor
ondemand
# cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_cur_freq
800000
and CPU is often very cool. now is 44°C
i think the problem may be in nvidia 8600M GT i have, which now reports 47°C as the GPU temperature (which is low).
i really don't know where to start investigating to understand the issue.
i don't know if that matters, but i have an SSD hard drive, so that should not generate any heat.
can anyone point me in the right direction?

If thats an older machine, did you open the case and see if there has dust collected inside? Are you running open source or proprietary graphics drivers?

Thanks for the answer.
machine is actually old, but i opened it recently and dust should not be a problem.
furthermore, temperature is low, so cooling system is working well.
i use proprietary drivers

A bios upgrade seem to have solved the issue.
anyway, i'm sure something started working differently in my arch box and i'd be glad to understand what.
marking solved.
