High disk i/o activity on inactive hard disk

On a recently bought internal hard disk which i made into an external, filesystem: ext4. when i mount it, conky shows high disk i/o activity even when it's not in use. i've got several other hard disks from the same manufacturer (seagate) that show none of these problems. when trying to do a SMART test, i get this error

sk_disk_check_sleep_mode: Operation not supported (udisks-error-quark, 0)

Any ideas oon how best to troubleshoot this. my google-fu has failed me sad

Re: High disk i/o activity on inactive hard disk

Is the test you are trying to run supported by the disk?

Note that it is not just the disk type but also the connection and enclosure which will affect what's available. What does smartctl -a /dev/sdX give?

Re: High disk i/o activity on inactive hard disk

use the -d switch when using smartctl.  I just set it to auto.

What files are being accessed on the external?

Re: High disk i/o activity on inactive hard disk

here's the out for smartctl with the -a switch, the -d switch kept saying it needed a device as the final argument even though i had entered it

So how are you trying to run the test exactly?

Re: High disk i/o activity on inactive hard disk

smartctl -d /dev/sdX, smartctl -ad /dev/sdX, smartctl -da /dev/sdX. tried all those combinations. that first give the error message i describe above, while the last one seems to take the -a as a device name. am i doing it wrong?

@not_sure
I'm not sure how to check the files being accessed, this happens even when i'm not doing anything on the hard disk.
