KDE: suddenly can't start GUI programs: cannot connect to X server

A KDE session started and worked for a while, then suddenly I can't start new GUI apps:
In existing Konsole window:

[il@il ~]$ echo $DISPLAY
:0
[il@il ~]$ konsole
No protocol specified
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
[il@il ~]$ kwrite
No protocol specified
kwrite: cannot connect to X server :0
[il@il ~]$

The last command I ran:

# hostnamectl set-hostname il

Then I have to restart the session.

This happened 2 times in 3 days.
