[SOLVED]login: PAM failure, aborting: Critical error - immediate abort

When I attempt to login,

I recieve the error:login: PAM failure, aborting: Critical error - immediate abort

and cannot login as root or my non-root user.

It happened two days after a system update, however, I noticed nothing particularly interesting in standard out during the update and I had no problems until tonight. While running VirtualBox and installing a windows xp host, the system seemingly aribitrarily crashed, closed X, and spit out the above error for the first time when I attempted to login.

While attempting to recover from this problem I noticed a passwd.pacnew, and shadow.pacnew among others which did not seem pertinent. I made no changes to passwd or shadow. I made no changes to /etc/pam.d/* or anything related to PAM.

I formerly used slim, configured to automatically login the only non-root user without a password, but disabled most daemons to try to solve the problem.

Does anyone have any suggestions to alleviate or diagnose this problem? I really don't want to reinstall fresh and even lose the programs I have to reinstall.

Are you sure those *.pacnew files are not relevant?

Do the logs show anything relevant?

Are you using systemd?

Check pacman.log to make sure you didn't miss something.

Re: [SOLVED]login: PAM failure, aborting: Critical error - immediate abort

Sorry I suppose my wording was unclear. I think /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow are both potentially relevant files, but from googling about this pacnew most others have dealt with this pacnew by ignoring it since it is based off of system defaults rather than the actual users in the system (and many have had problems from incorrectly mergeing these two pacnew files). I meant the other .pacnew files seemed irrelevant but I get:

sudo find . -name *pacnew
./etc/shadow.pacnew
./etc/passwd.pacnew
./etc/yaourtrc.pacnew
./etc/rc.conf.pacnew
./etc/gshadow.pacnew
./etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist.pacnew
./etc/vimrc.pacnew
./etc/group.pacnew
./etc/fstab.pacnew

Do any of those other than shadow, gshadow, or passwd seem pertinent to you.

I rechecked pacman.log and it seemed to contain nothing related but here is:

cat pacman.log | grep 2012-12-26 :

I am not using systemd.

Re: [SOLVED]login: PAM failure, aborting: Critical error - immediate abort

Please use [code ][/code ] tags.

Well, gshadow and group are also potentially relevant.

rc.conf doesn't seem relevant? Why not?

The fact that you are not running systemd is potentially relevant, also. Although I think technically you should be OK for another 3 days or so at least.

It really is not a good idea not to deal with *.pacnew files as they are created.

But the crash is also a factor. Can you find anything in the log files? boot.log? dmesg? errors.log? auth.log?

EDIT: I assume you made the relevant changes for the initramfs and regenerated it.

What DE does slim log you into exactly?

Re: [SOLVED]login: PAM failure, aborting: Critical error - immediate abort

slim logs me into xmonad.

I did the changes to /etc/mkinitcpio.conf, but just in case here it is currently:

# vim:set ft=sh
# MODULES
# The following modules are loaded before any boot hooks are
# run. Advanced users may wish to specify all system modules
# in this array. For instance:
# MODULES="piix ide_disk reiserfs"
MODULES=""

# BINARIES
# This setting includes any additional binaries a given user may
# wish into the CPIO image. This is run last, so it may be used to
# override the actual binaries included by a given hook
# BINARIES are dependency parsed, so you may safely ignore libraries
BINARIES=""

# FILES
# This setting is similar to BINARIES above, however, files are added
# as-is and are not parsed in any way. This is useful for config files.
FILES=""

# HOOKS
# This is the most important setting in this file. The HOOKS control the
# modules and scripts added to the image, and what happens at boot time.
# Order is important, and it is recommended that you do not change the
# order in which HOOKS are added. Run 'mkinitcpio -H <hook name>' for
# help on a given hook.
# 'base' is _required_ unless you know precisely what you are doing.
# 'udev' is _required_ in order to automatically load modules
# 'filesystems' is _required_ unless you specify your fs modules in MODULES
# Examples:
## This setup specifies all modules in the MODULES setting above.
## No raid, lvm2, or encrypted root is needed.
# HOOKS="base"
#
## This setup will autodetect all modules for your system and should
## work as a sane default
# HOOKS="base udev autodetect block filesystems"
#
## This setup will generate a 'full' image which supports most systems.
## No autodetection is done.
# HOOKS="base udev block filesystems"
#
## This setup assembles a pata mdadm array with an encrypted root FS.
## Note: See 'mkinitcpio -H mdadm' for more information on raid devices.
# HOOKS="base udev block mdadm encrypt filesystems"
#
## This setup loads an lvm2 volume group on a usb device.
# HOOKS="base udev block lvm2 filesystems"
#
## NOTE: If you have /usr on a separate partition, you MUST include the
# usr, fsck and shutdown hooks.
HOOKS="base udev autodetect modconf block filesystems usbinput fsck"

# COMPRESSION
# Use this to compress the initramfs image. By default, gzip compression
# is used. Use 'cat' to create an uncompressed image.
#COMPRESSION="gzip"
#COMPRESSION="bzip2"
#COMPRESSION="lzma"
#COMPRESSION="xz"
#COMPRESSION="lzop"

# COMPRESSION_OPTIONS
# Additional options for the compressor
#COMPRESSION_OPTIONS=""

Does it look okay?

I also logged into a live archlinux image and did:

mkdir fakeroot
mount /dev/sda2 fakeroot
mount /dev/sda1 fakeroot/boot
mount /dev/sda3 fakeroot/home
arch-chroot fakeroot
mkinitcpio -p linux

just to be sure, but I still cannot log in and get the same error.

I looked at rc.conf and rc.conf.pacnew but the pacnew just has an empty daemons array and currently for debugging I have most daemons with ! in front.

/var/log/boot has:

Thank you cfr so much for your help thus far. I hope I can get it working without reinstalling everything.

Re: [SOLVED]login: PAM failure, aborting: Critical error - immediate abort

Do you think the error really is related to the upgrade? The crash happened a day later.

Re: [SOLVED]login: PAM failure, aborting: Critical error - immediate abort

Fix the syslog-ng error. The default now assumes you are using systemd. You are not so you need to revert the config so that it picks up stuff in the right place.

EDIT: In /etc/syslog-ng/syslog-ng.conf you need to make sure you have

unix-dgram("/dev/log");

rather than the journald path.

EDIT 2: Or switch to systemd. Since you will have to do this soon anyway...

Did you reboot?

Re: [SOLVED]login: PAM failure, aborting: Critical error - immediate abort

I fixed the syslog-ng error temporarly as you suggested (I saw another post where someone suggested that line) since I'd rather be able to boot before I attempt to switch to systemd.

My most recent boot results in:

Re: [SOLVED]login: PAM failure, aborting: Critical error - immediate abort

You may now find that you get some more useful messages in the log files... (I'm guessing the syslog-ng failure explains why those log files are all weirdly empty.)

Re: [SOLVED]login: PAM failure, aborting: Critical error - immediate abort

What is PAM? How can I find out what files are related to PAM and could be damaged? Is there some reason VirtualBox could have damaged files that affect login?

Re: [SOLVED]login: PAM failure, aborting: Critical error - immediate abort

chroot in and run pacman -Qs pam. Then use pacman -Ql to list the files.

It is the "PAM (Pluggable Authentication Modules) library" according to pacman.

Doh! Yes I should have realized that would be the effect of fixing the syslog-ng error. Indeed I do! in errors.log the most exciting lines are:

PAM _pam_init_handlers: could not open /etc/pam.conf
Dec 27 21:58:44 neumann login: PAM _pam_init_handlers: could not open /etc/pam.conf
Dec 27 21:58:44 neumann login: PAM pam_start: failed to initialize handlers
Dec 27 21:58:44 neumann login: Couldn't initialize PAM: Critical error - immediate abort

and indeed /etc/pam.conf is missing! Is there a default config file I can get somewhere? Any idea why it might be missing? I couldn't find anything on google with someone having a similar problem.

Re: [SOLVED]login: PAM failure, aborting: Critical error - immediate abort

Pacman -Qs pam doesn't seem to posess a /etc/pam.conf file or any other files I am missing. But why does my system seem to be looking for a /etc/pam.conf file? I have /etc/security/pam_env.conf.

Re: [SOLVED]login: PAM failure, aborting: Critical error - immediate abort

I don't think it is missing. At least, I don't have that file either. I think it probably shouldn't be looking for it. See man pam.conf. /etc/pam.d/ is an alternative, I think.

Re: [SOLVED]login: PAM failure, aborting: Critical error - immediate abort

As per the suggestion of a gentleman in the irc (who was rather helpful but also rather rude as gentlemen from irc oft tend to be I suppose) I did the following from my live arch image

mkdir foo
mount /dev/sda2 foo
mount /dev/sda1 foo/boot
mount /dev/sda3 foo/home
pacman -Qqk | awk '!a Arch help desk guru ++  {print $1}'

which returned all the packages which installed files I was apparently missing. Among them were pambase, shadow several others. After reinstalling them one-by-one manually with pacman my system is back to it's previous state.

Thank you again cfr as well as the rather helpful but rather rude gentleman from IRC

Now how do I mark this thing resolved? wink

Edit your first post and tag the subject line.

Well, that's what you get: politer but ineffective or ruder but effective wink.
