Occasionally sound will become loud and distorted, but if I adjust the volume in the mixer the sound volume goes back to normal and is not distorted (even at the maximum volume). I suspect that somehow the volume has been set to more than 100%. I wonder if VLC is perhaps at fault, since it allows setting the volume over 100%, maybe this is interacting badly with the driver or pulseaudio. Has anyone else had a similar experience?
The audio chip is an on-board Realtek ALC898.
