Linksys AE1200 wifi adapter with Broadcom BCM43235 driver not working

I followed the instructions on the Broadcom wireless page from ArchWiki, and I tried every method, and none worked at all. The interface never showed up with "ifconfig -a", and I could not get ndiswrapper to work with the windows drivers either. Any suggestions for alternate ways?

I don't think you'll get suggestions for any further alternatives.  But I suspect you'd get a lot farther if you provided some information and were willing to go back through some of the steps.

For example - did that card even show up in lspci?  Isn't that a usb-only card?

Yes, it shows up in lsusb, but my chipset shows up in the compatible brcm80211 devices page

I am interested in what happens if you boot with it disconnected, grab a list of the installed kernel modules using lsmod, then connect the NIC, see if any new kernel modules were installed, and look at the end of your dmesg and of journalctl

You might post any interesting results.

sorry. absolutely no extra modules are loaded or unloaded. but I know that the os detects it because it shows up in lsusb

That doesn't say anything except that the device is powered on. It does not say anything about the OS. The OS should know something, the docs claim that the brcmfmac driver supports it, but you haven't provided any info for us to know what's going on. ewaller gave you the hint: dmesg. Also exact lsusb output would be nice, so we'll know the usb-id of the device.

Here is the lsusb output:

Bus 001 Device 002: ID 13b1:0039 Linksys AE1200 802.11bgn Wireless Adapter [Broadcom BCM43235]

dmesg shows this when i load the "brcmfmac" module:

usbcore: registered new interface driver brcmfmac

Re: Linksys AE1200 wifi adapter with Broadcom BCM43235 driver not working

Hmm, if brcmfmac supported this device, there would be no need to load it manually. You probably have rev1 or rev2 versions of this device, while only rev3 is supported. Googling for "13b1:0039", there's one person reporting success with ndiswrapper, so that's your best bet. That, or buy a new device, anything but Broadcom.

After you do that, what is the output of ip link   ??
