Upgraded system, rebooted, now can't open root device!!!

:x Anybody know how to fix this:
VFS: Cannot open root device "discs/disc0/part3" or unknown-block(0,0)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS:
Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)

How to get to root to fix this, and how do you fix it??

                                                                      smile Thanks -- Larry

Fine, I saw that. I rebooted, now I'm stuck at a blinking cursor and can't get back into the system!

Are you using grub? You can just edit the line to the new syntax before you boot. 'e' is the default key.

Thanks Glib -- I changed the grub line to hda 3 and I'm in. I assume I still have to go into root and change that line there? Can it be done from the boot screen? I rebooted and the original edit was lost!

Yes. Using the edit (e) option in grub to change the parameters is only temporary for one boot. You will have to go back and change menu.lst in the root filesystem to be permanent.

Re: Upgraded system, rebooted, now can't open root device!!!

Thanks glib,Penguin -- I changed the line in grub, everything works fine now! The problems are usually easily fixable, I just  didn't know how to get back into the system. I'm not trying to be a pain in the ass, but who has time to spend reading all the information in the forums? With your help it only took about 10 minutes actual time!! I would have spent 2 hours reading. Thanks again -- Larry big_smile

*Sigh* And therefore you will never learn to help yourself. Consider to use windows.

Moo-Crumpus -- What purpose do these forums serve???? If all you can say is go read the threads than get rid of the poster interaction and just put up a huge line saying "JUST READ & SOLVE IT YOUR SELF" I knew i could fix it, I just needed to know how to get back to root.

Re: Upgraded system, rebooted, now can't open root device!!!

Wrong, you should have read the news before doing the large updgrade. Hints on devfs beeing finally replaced with udev are that old. You had a lot of time to prepare yourself. You act as if there was never any information, then you bark for help. This will not fit to KISS on the long run - and I doubt Larry will be very often very happy.

Inspite of thinking about my response, you start flaming me and demand I should just shut up?

You'ld better keep an eye on informations, to be prepared for major changes.
