Use alsaconf, there's probably stuff the module doesn't like in /etc/modprobe.conf.

That seemed to fix it on my ESS1688 based machine, but the Vibra 16 machine is still unhappy. Any thoughts on that one?
EDIT:
Just for reference, I had to clear the contents of modprobe.conf before alsaconf functioned on that one machine. The second machine is still quite uncooperative.
