This is my first post here
Give this command in terminal
sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf
then under the section device, replace driver
nvidia
to
nouveau

Wasn't xorg.conf supposed to be recently deprecated?

I've been having the same problem after removing nvidia proprietary and installing nouveau. I did the same thing i wrote here and the problem solved.
Another solution is to create a file in
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-nouveau.conf
and put this in the file
Section "Device"
Identifier "Nvidia card"
Driver "nouveau"
EndSection

xorg.conf is indeed deprecated, as xorg auto-configure is very good (atleast with the open source drivers),
but both nvidia and ati proprietary drivers use it.
Icebreath : the xorg.conf you edited was created by the nividia driver, and is likely to have lots of specific stuff in it for that driver that may conflict with nouvea settings.
When switching from nvidia to nouveau, renaming xorg.conf to xorg.conf.nividia (or similar) is best option.
Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.
clean chroot building not flexible enough ?
Try clean chroot manager by graysky

No, it's still being read. It's the equivalent to xorg.conf.d/99-something.conf
Your problem is that you have one, instructing X to use nvidia. Just remove it, and X will use auto-detection.

Removing xorg.conf did help BUT when desktop starts, everything is inverted vertically AND horizontally, which give a very weird effect (apart from being unusable).
Interestingly, cursor is not being inverted and order of letters remains left->right, but they are inverted upside-down...

I also have an R61 with NVS140M and have never had such an issue. I am using 32 bit OS though.
When I tested nouveau a while back, I installed extra/xf86-video-nouveau and removed nvidia and nvidia-utils and all other nvidia stuff, renamed the xorg.conf for nvidia to something else, and it worked.
Here is a similar report.
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions … wn-864210/
Are you all up to date? What version of nouveau and kernel are you using? I can try it out real quick since I have similar hardware to see what I get.

At this point, xorg.conf is still pointing to nvidia, so I will rename it.
$ sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.bak
I just rebooted and everything is good. Here is what I'm using currently:
linux 3.7.7-1
nouveau-dri 9.0.2-1
xf86-video-nouveau 1.0.6-1
xorg-server 1.13.2-1
What else is starting beside X? Maybe something else is causing it. Perhaps just try X with nothing but an xterm? What else is in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d?

Thanks, gsgleason, but this is exactly what I've been doing.
I opened a separate thread for this issue here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 2#p1232912
