after installing arch i have a problem with temperature (70>80>87> then my laptop is going sleep :-/ )
i install the amd driver catalyst (close source),powertop, powerdown,laptop-mode-tools

and it ok .. the temp nearly 50 (with firefox is run), but with little additional work its starting over (50>60>70)

Re: ATI With catalyst ... overheat problem

here....
2. Profile-based frequency switching

# echo profile > /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_method

The "profile" mode will allow you to select one of the five profiles below. Different profiles, for the most part, end up changing the frequency/voltage of the card.

"default" uses the default clocks and does not change the power state. This is the default behavior.
"auto" selects between "mid" and "high" power states based on the whether the system is on battery power or not. The "low" power state are selected when the monitors are in the dpms off state.
"low" forces the gpu to be in the low power state all the time. Note that "low" can cause display problems on some laptops; this is why auto only uses "low" when displays are off.
"mid" forces the gpu to be in the "mid" power state all the time. The "low" power state is selected when the monitors are in the dpms off state.
"high" forces the gpu to be in the "high" power state all the time. The "low" power state is selected when the monitors are in the dpms off state.

So lets say we want the "low" option...for this, run the following command:

# echo low > /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_profile

the last command "echo low > /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_profile

reduces a lot the temperature of both my hd5670. The screens flashes sometimes, but..... downs very well the temperature. With the proprietary driver I haven't do it.

Re: ATI With catalyst ... overheat problem

thanks my friend.. i read this note in wiki, and when i try it:

~ >sudo echo low > /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_profile
bash: /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_profile: No such file or directory

am searching for "power_profile" in my Root disk, and dont found it!

Re: ATI With catalyst ... overheat problem

This file is for open source ATI drivers, not Catalyst. For Catalyst, open amdcccle and fiddle with the sliders in PowerPlay section.
Notebooks are known for having a piss-poor cooling systems, my card can easily reach >100C on youtube videos on both Windows and Linux.

Re: ATI With catalyst ... overheat problem

Power profile is indeed only for the open source driver. Which Wm/DE are you using? Something like compiz or Kwin with a lot of effects will use your gpu to the point that catalyst will scale the card up to full clock speeds. Some laptop cards can run pretty hot when this happens, especially if the heatsink isn't seated well. You may be better off using the open source driver in that case and force your power profile to low as already mentioned. You could also try to turn off hardware acceleration in firefox and flash.

Re: ATI With catalyst ... overheat problem

I have a N5010, try running the hose of a vacuum cleaner over all of the vents in the back of the case, whilst brushing with a soft brush (I use the one supplied with cleaner).

I knocked nearly 10 deg C off my temps.  You have to do this regularily sad

Vacuum cleaners create static which can damage electronic components, definitely not a good idea. You could use a can of compressed air to try this instead. If your laptop is out of warranty and you are comfortable around electronics, you could always open it up and clean out the heatsink or better yet, reseat it with decent thermal paste.
