Fan spins up when laptop plugged in and wireless on

My laptop, a Dell Inspiron 7520, is running Arch x86_64 with an Intel i7-3612QM processor.  The fan is normally quite quiet, and the laptop does not get terribly warm.  However, when I plug it in, the fan spins up a bit more, and when the computer is plugged in *and* the Wifi is on, the fan is nearly always at full power (and noise!), even if the laptop is idling.  As soon as I unplug the laptop (leaving the wireless on), the fan immediately spins back down to a much quieter setting.

How do I tell the kernel what fan speeds to use?  It works fairly well right now (aside from the above issue) at keeping the laptop cool, so I don't want a completely re-engineered solution; is there a flag somewhere or something I can echo to a control file to influence fan behavior?  Thanks!
