blackbox and fluxbox

Soon after I first installed Arch (back in Feb 2005) I was using blackbox and then decided to try out fluxbox. Since, at that time, I didn't find the newest fluxbox version using pacman, I DL'd the fluxbox sources, compiled them and began using fluxbox or blackbox, depending on how I felt on a particular day.

Now I want to install (using pacman) a newer version of fluxbox that I see is in the Arch repositories. Questions:

1. Do I need to get rid of the self-compiled fluxbox first?

2. Why do I get the warning (or whatever that is) from pacman that blackbox is installed and should be removed? Heck, I'm currently using both now and have not had any problems! I don't get it   :?:

Thanks in advance,

Re: blackbox and fluxbox

Since you have compiled a version of fluxbox out of the pacman scope, there is no way they conflict because the pacman fluxbox installation uses different directories than the one you compiled (I think the latter uses in /usr/local).

I just removed everything named fluxbox (or flux, I don't remember) even the user configuration (.fluxbox?) and the pertinent binaries in /usr/local/bin and installed fluxbox through pacman, but this way it conflicts with blackbox.

Re: blackbox and fluxbox

Thanks for the explanation! I guess I'll avoid pacman for fluxbox updates -- I like playing around with both flux and bb  8)

Re: blackbox and fluxbox

You could make a cvs PKGBUILD for fluxbox (fluxbox-cvs) and submit it to AUR. A blackbox-cvs entry is already there. If you had compiled from source using a PKGBUILD you wouldn't have had the problem. Using the 'conflicts=('fluxbox')' option in the PKGBUILD takes care of removing fluxbox-cvs when installing fluxbox from repo.

mmm, thought I didn't see an AUR entry, or is it only in your personal repo?
Anyway, he could use it from your repo...
