[SOLVED] Video locks the computer up

Anytime I try to play video in mplayer, vlc, or anything else, Arch Linux seems to completely lock up with the audio kind of skipping and then stops. I've checked all the logs and there are no error, warnings or out-of-the-oridinary messages.

I have tried stable kernels ranging from 3.4 and on, mainline kernel and the like and nothing seems to solve the issue.

What could cause this and how can I start troubleshooting it?

Edit: Installing the nvidia driver and replacing nouvaeu seem to resolve the issue for me. In fact, everything seems to be running better.
