Default root password

It is now 3 days that I installed for the first time archlinux. I am very happy with, I find it a advanced mixed of debian and slackware. Shortly: that's the distribution I was looking for.
But now, I have to solve different things (new distro, new challenges).
I am trying to make some changes to the configuration under KDE and the computer is asking me for the root password (that's logical). The problem is I didn't set any password for root and the computer doesn't seem to accept "empty" root passwords.
Is there a default root password or do I have to set one when logged as root and then come back to my user account?.

to set the password for root:

su root
passwd

to set a password for user do the same except append your username to passwd.
