[SOLVED] Where is Gnome Classic in GDM

In install gnome with packages gnome and gnome-extra, but the only possible session at GDM login panel is Gnome, and no option for Gnome Classic. This option is available when installing Gnome on Ubuntu/Debian.

Did I miss something during installation/configuration ?

Re: [SOLVED] Where is Gnome Classic in GDM

The only way to get back to gnome classic in GDM 3.6 is by forced fallback mode in system settings.

I think Gnome Classic will be enabled in Gnome 3.8 which will be released soon.

Re: [SOLVED] Where is Gnome Classic in GDM

You can either force the use of fallback mode, as mentioned above, or make use of the predefined session file (gnome-fallback.session in /usr/share/gnome-session/sessions/). You'll just need to create a *.desktop file under /usr/share/xsessions/.

e.g. /usr/share/xsessions/gnome-classic.desktop:

[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=GNOME Classic
Comment=This session logs you into the GNOME Classic desktop environment
Exec=/usr/bin/gnome-session --session=gnome-fallback
Icon=
Type=XSession

This should allow you to see and use both entries (Gnome, aka Gnome Shell, and Gnome Classic, aka a fallback session with gnome-panel and metacity) in GDM.

Waiting for that release, as Gnome Classic has its own interesting features.

very subtle and reasonable solution. Thanks!
