I've been using OSS for quite a long time but I decided to switch back to ALSA. I uninstalled OSS and removed ALSA from the blacklist. However, this is what happens when I try to open alsamixer:
alsamixer
ALSA lib ctl_oss.c:398:(_snd_ctl_oss_open) Cannot open device /dev/mixer
cannot open mixer: No such file or directory
Interestingly the sound still works - Youtube videos have sound, but nothing else does. mplayer for example says this:
[AO_ALSA] alsa-lib: pcm_oss.c:397:(_snd_pcm_oss_open) Cannot open device /dev/dsp
Any ideas?

A couple of thoughts
Do you also have extra/alsa-oss installed? Are you loading that on startup?

You can select alsa with -ao switch in mplayer
mplayer -ao file.avi
See
mplayer -ao help

OSS as in OSS4 or ALSA OSS emulation?
This looks like remnants of some weird "trick ALSA apps to use OSS" configuration. Alsamixer and mplayer's ALSA plugin should never touch /dev/dsp or /dev/mixer.
Are you sure you don't have some funky /etc/asoundrc or ~/.asoundrc installed?
