Pressing the fn+brighter button reduces the brightness to minimum, fn+less brightness does not work on gnome. However, setting the brightness with the extension for gnome-shell works. I have an intel i5 and a thinkpad edge s430.
Any ideas?

Yes I tried it but acpi_backlight=vendor in grub freezes my laptop the first time I press the key
$ acpi_listen
video/brightnessup BRTUP 00000086 00000000
video/brightnessdown BRTDN 00000087 00000000
xbacklight -inc 10 or - dec 10 on the terminal works. I defined a keybinding with that in gnome but it doesn't help.
when brightness is set to full the out put of
/usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon/gsd-backlight-helper --get-brightness is 0
changing brightness with the fn-control keys to more changes it to 5, lowering brightness with the fn-control keys, changes it to 0 again.
the output of /usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon/gsd-backlight-helper --get-max-brightness is 100
