If I try to plug in a usb device (usb soundcard, harddrive, mouse, etc.) it is not detected unless it is present at boot. For example if I have a usb drive plugged in during boot I can detect hotplugged usb drives, but if I don't have one plugged in at boot time linux won't detect it (no /dev/sdb).
Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can resolve this? Thanks.
EDIT:
This bug sounds similar to my problem. I'll have to try the "lsusb -v" thing sometime later.

Do they show up in lsusb output? Anything in dmesg?
It's been a while since I've seen problems with udev.

Hey I had the same problem and is was an issue with the power save/autosuspend settings of the usb controller. Do you have installed any power saving tool?

I have started using pm-utils recently (pm-suspend in particular). I tried hotplugging my usb drive after rebooting and it appeared as /dev/sdb this time. Could you tell me what happened in your case?
Thanks.
