favourite file manager and why

What's everyone's favourite file manager, and why? I'm using XFE in Openbox atm, and am impressed, but wonder if there's somthing else out there that's easier to customize/faster/has a better interface.

Your thoughts?

I like rox. Just because its lightweight, appealing, and functional.
It has some cool keyboard shortcuts as well. "/"  for example allows you to complete a path by entering it manually, backspace goes back one directory and control + 1 will remeber a directory so pressing 1 at a later time will bring you back to it.

I use ROX, emelfm and worker depending on ... (don't know actually). At least they are not bloated.

looks quite nice, I might give it a try. How's speed ?

gbrowser is here quite unstable. It quickly freezes or eats up 100% cpu load. But I will try it when it will be fixed. Features ´re looking good.

Re: favourite file manager and why

When I run Gnome or KDE, I use their default file manager, but when I'm running any of the other WMs/DMs (which is usually the case), I run Rox-filer.  It took me a few days to grow comfortable with it because it feels very different, but once I did all the other file manager options feel inadequate.

don't forget find. I have to admit, I do use cli 90% of the time unless I want to quickly browse.

I usually use the CLI. When I need a GUI file manager, I use endeavour or konqueror.

xffm. i like tree view.

although lately i've trained Konqueror to act like xffm but with the added bonus of middle clicking a folder opens it up in a new window in icon view, which is nice for pictures and folders in which random things have been shoved. however outside KDE konqueror takes for fucking ever to load.

There's a way of getting around the KDE app load speed problems - KDE comes with something to preload the stuff the apps need. IIRC it's kde-preload or something like that.

I think you need to be in the kde desktop for that to work.

Re: favourite file manager and why

i use rox and the command line. i also like gentoo and mc, but i never seem to get around to actually using them. rox is awesome, great interface, fast, and i like the right click functionality. 75-80% of the time i just use the command line because it's usually the most convenient. i use rox mostly just for accessing media files, now that i think about it.

Re: favourite file manager and why

I have tried several file managers but so far ends back to Konqueror. Not having to load the whole KDE, there is a standalone package (user made).

Sorry, I should have said this is a very young project, so problems will arise, but I think its very promising.

Re: favourite file manager and why

I'm using terminal and the lastest svn version of thunar, the new file manager for Xfce. It's not finished yet, but you can copy, past and walk through directories and that's enough for me  wink .

Re: favourite file manager and why

mc is great, even when I'm in the desktop, but when my friends who I'm trying to convert to Linux are watching, I use krusader, which is almost as good, but a bit more clumsy.

Re: favourite file manager and why

Konqueror's my favorite.

Reasons:

ftp://
html://
file://
fish://

For those websites that require me to be using IE, I just tell Konqueror to "pretend" it's IE for the benefit of the website.  Great for on-line banking and income tax services.

Man, I was gonna say that, though with more spaces  roll

I should alias those commands
l=>ls, c=>cp, mv=>m, r=>rm - it'd double my productivity!

Re: favourite file manager and why

Konqueror is my favourite. It just has lots of nice little extras. Somebody earlier mentioned the kioslaves, like fish:// and the like, so I can just do fish://HomeServer, and as if by magic I am seamlessly yet securely browsing files on my home network server at my non-university home all the way over in Berkshire, which often comes in handy smile

The command line has its uses since you can be so specific and yet so general at the same time, allowing you to do some stuff that would be a bit of a pain in Konqueror or whatever, likely involving a lot of Ctrl-clicking and stuff,  but then again it doesn't have cool things like file previews, drag and drop, etc. File previews are really good because sometimes on a bad day you might just make some really bad file naming decisions, and having to open 10 .pdf files to find the one you want is no fun at all wink
