I bought minecraft today
Downloaded from the AUR https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/minecraft/
Installed following the wiki https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Minecraft
And followed the advice in this thread to run in web https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=151478
But still no joy.
When I try to update I hit a
fatal error occured (4):nulland when I try to run without an update it gets to "Done Loading" then never goes further.
Using openJDK7 and Icedtea-web-java7

I don't understand what you mean by "run in web", but the launcher should work simply by typing "minecraft" in a console.
Also, provide us with whatever the console shows up when you get that error.
EDIT1: The only webclient is the demo-client. You bought your account, so you should need this.

If I were you I'd try to download Minecraft from the download page https://s3.amazonaws.com/MinecraftDownl … ecraft.jar
And then try the command: java -jar /home/yourusername/Downloads-orwhatev/minecraft.jar
(launch in terminal, this way you will see debugging output)
Don't forget to mark as [SOLVED].
