Macbook trackpad jumpy, behaves as though following a grid

I am just now installing Linux for the first time; everything has been going smoothly with the notable exception of my trackpad. When using the trackpad (external mice work perfectly fine) the cursor tends to jump around in an odd way. It does not move smoothly; it jumps along its intended path in increments every so often. Also, the cursor seems not to enjoy being moved diagonally. It only moves in the four cardinal directions. If I move my finger diagonally, it simply alternates between moving vertically and horizontally. Any help?
