Need help silencing an ALSA warning printf: The dmix plugin supports o

ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:957:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) The dmix plugin supports only playback stream

I get this when running espeak. I think espeak is doing nothing wrong; the problem is likely with the configuration files that were installed on my system as part of installing ALSA.
I have not changed them at all, and the sound card is your run-of-the-mill Intel HD Audio with a Realtek codec.

Something in some configuration file causes dmix or ALSA to print this warning, probably somewhere in /usr/share/alsa. But I can't figure out where. Any ideas?
