Displaying subtitles on top of an online video

First of all, hello! As the title suggests, I'm trying to use an utility that allows me to watch an online video with subtitles. I know MPlayer can do this (creating a small window with subtitles only) and I really like a software I've used in Windows and which also works in Linux (with Mono installed), that's called Greenfish Subtitle Player. And it works, the problem is that when I play the video in fullscreen, the little window with the subtitles dissapears. The same happens with MPlayer.

That's shouldn't happen. Does anyone know a way to fix that? I want to see the subtitles with the video in fullscreen and I haven't been able to find an answer.

Any suggestion would be appreciated!

Thanks for reading!

Depending on your window manager (which one are you using?) you will likely be able to right click on the title bar for the subtitle window and click "always on top."

I would look for a way to do that. I don't know if that will work in your case, mind you, since I don't know what WM you are using.

Re: Displaying subtitles on top of an online video

Hi! I'm using KDE (and I have also tested in XFCE4) and I've tried that but the window still hides when I watch a video in fullscreen.

And to do what I want with MPlayer, I found this thread: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=152575 with this command

mplayer /dev/zero -demuxer rawvideo -rawvideo w=1024:h=128:format=bgra -subfont-autoscale 2 -sub example.srt

but I also can't get it to show in fullscreen.

I have also tried to disable desktop effects (I use Xcompmgr) but it's the same. I really don't know what else to try, but there should be a way.

Re: Displaying subtitles on top of an online video

Two other things... If it's possible to watch the video in mplayer then you could just have the subtitles in the same window... But I realize that's not always possible.

Otherwise I don't know of an easy way to do what you're doing. There's this program called Devil's Pie but as far as I can find, it is mainly meant to work with metacity (and therefore gnome). So that MIGHT be worth looking into. https://www.archlinux.org/packages/?q=devilspie

If you find anything please share

Thanks! I'll definitely look into Devil's Pie. smile

And I'll keep searching, I just think there should be a way to keep a window on top of a video in fullscreen.

Re: Displaying subtitles on top of an online video

I have the same problem when I want to watch online video with subtitles in linux. I then come up with an open-source, cross-platform solution Penguin Subtitle Player. It works like Greenfish Subtitle Player but it works well in linux and is always on the front.

Please don't necrobump https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fo … bumping.22

You should add this sort of information to the Wiki.
