[Gnome 3.8] stuck in fallback mode and screensaver not working

hi,
I was using the falllback mode in gnome 3.6. When i upgraded to gnome 3.8, it still seems to continue to use such a mode.
I didn't even had a WM runnning. I had to run manually metacity in a terminal. Finally, I have added metacity.desktop to ~/.config/autostart to get a WM automatically.

The question is how do I switch to gnome shell and use the new extensions to get a compatibility mode ??

Also, the screensaver is not working anymore, the screen is never light off. Even trying to lock the screen manually does nothing.
