Ethernet issues on Thinkpad Port Replicator

Hey guys,

Here is my problem. When dock my Lenovo to the port-replicator (dock) Network Manager will not detect that the Ethernet cable is connected to the port-replicator. If I move the Ethernet cable from the RJ-45 port on the dock to the RJ-45 port on the laptop while the laptop is still docked Network Manager still reads Ethernet Network as disconnected. If I restart the Network Manager service it still does not see a connection. If I reboot the laptop while it is docked then Network Manager detects a connection and fires up dhcpcd and connects via eth0 -- happy times smile. I'm guessing this has something to do with the fact that the RJ-45 port on the replicator is not seen as a separate interface but is seen as eth0 (just like the port on the side of the laptop). Any ideas how to get the laptop to seemlessly switch from wired interface when docked to wireless when undocked? If we can figure out how to get Network Manager to automatically detect the eth adapter on the dock can it be set to prefer wired over wireless? maybe auto disable wireless when docked?

I am running xfce with Network Manager and network-manager-applet.

Re: Ethernet issues on Thinkpad Port Replicator

Unfortunately, I cannot recall if I ever managed to fix this. I have since upgraded to a new laptop which does not have a dock. My brother is currently using my old laptop with the dock. He does not have this problem but he is running Linux Mint 18 (MATE) on it. So apart from installing Linux Mint on the system I don't have a solution. I'm sorry. Hopefully someone else can be more helpful.

Does lspci -v show it as connected?

Re: Ethernet issues on Thinkpad Port Replicator

I would guess that if Predictable Network Interface names are enabled, the network manager would see you are on a different network and take appropriate action.
