Re: numlock LED on keyboard switchs off when switching input methods

Same behaviour here, but even without switching input methods. When logging in, Numlock is active and the led is ON. When pressing CTRL, the led goes OFF but numlock stays active. Pressing numlock then turns off numlock and the led stays off. When pressing it again, the led goes on again and numlock is reactivated...

Running Gnome 3.8.2 too, with GDM. Numlock is activated in .xinitrx with xnumlockx.

Any suggestions?

EDIT: Numlock led goes out when I press the SUPER or ALT keys as well...

Re: numlock LED on keyboard switchs off when switching input methods

I updated to Gnome 3.8.3 and the Linux 3.9.5 kernel, but the problem still remains. I didn't use to have this issue until about 1 or 2 months ago... :-( It gets really annoying and I would like to get rid of this behaviour. Has anyone ideas of where to begin to search, what I can try? The problem isn't only there in an active desktop session, but also in GDM. I have to press SHIFT to enter a capital in my PW and that turns off the numlock LED, however my keypad keeps on working. When I press numlock 1 time, keypad stops working and LED stays off. When I press it a second time, LED goes on and keypad works again. After that all presses are behaving as expected.

Numlock is been turned on with numlockx (in .xinitrc) as suggested in the wiki. When I get numlockx out of .xinitrc and make a launcher to autostart it with gnome-session, it doesn't solve the issue either.

Please help!

Re: numlock LED on keyboard switchs off when switching input methods

Can this have something to do with keyboard layouts? I'm using a Belgian layout (AZERTY) in console, GDM and Gnome 3.
I tried with another user account, same problem, so it seems to be system wide.

Any ideas on this?

Re: numlock LED on keyboard switchs off when switching input methods

I tried with standard EN-US keyboard layout in GDM and the problem remains... We can eliminate this as a possible cause. No idea if this also occurs in other login managers, but it's still weird to me that it used to work fine until some time ago.

I'm running out of ideas on this, some inspiration would be very welcome, thank you!

Please elaborate on your situation, for starters:

     - Kernel version
     - Login manager
     - Desktop environment
     - Keyboard layout

This makes it easier to pinpoint the problem.
Thank you!

Re: numlock LED on keyboard switchs off when switching input methods

Since everyone facing this particular problem seems to be using GDM + Gnome and we have this issue first when using one of the modifier keys in GDM (in my case SHIFT) and then again when the Gnome session has loaded, I thought this might have to do with Gnome specifically.

I decided to try SLIM as my login manager, opening a Gnome session after login. It seems I'm right because I can press SHIFT or any of the other modifier keys in SLIM without it changing the state of my numlock led. So far so good, but when the Gnome session has loaded and I press the SUPER key to open the activities overlay, my numlock led turns out again. However, numlock is still active. Pressing numlock then turns off numlock and the led stays out. Pressing it a second time turns numlock and its led on again and it stays on when pressing the modifier keys.

This makes me decide it is a bug in Gnome and GDM, but it's weird not everyone has this issue. Next up would be to log a bug, but would this be upstream or Arch specific?

I logged it on the Arch bug tracker: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/36091

Thanks.

Maybe its problem in GDM and not Arch specific?

Then Arch devs should report back upstream I believe. They will probably take a look at how they compiled the package and if that's clean it's something for upstream.

Re: numlock LED on keyboard switchs off when switching input methods

This bug drove me crazy for awhile and I thought I was the only one experiencing it. I think I have isolated the problem but haven't had an opportunity to thoroughly test it yet. I found that after rebuilding my /home/username directory that in my backup there was a folder labeled .gconf. Now in my rebuilt home directory the folder was missing, or should I say it was now relocated to being called gconf (note the missing .) and was a subfolder in the .conf folder.  After trying numerous times to fix and finally fixing it at the same time I discovered this change in folder locations seems pretty convenient so I believe I've stumbled onto something here. Anyone wanna try testing?

Then this

So you suppose to remove the .gconf and .conf folders, let the system rebuild the folders at next login where necessary and see if this solves it? Another way to test this would be to create a new user and login with that one. I guess it might work at the time when you log in, but that couldn't possible keep it from happening in GDM when entering the password, because the homefolders aren't loaded yet at that stage. This must be a bug in GDM's package or upstream.

Re: numlock LED on keyboard switchs off when switching input methods

I can't comment on it affecting GDM as I use SLiM to log in. But essentially I think you got it. I would make a backup of the .gconf folder in case you need settings from it, erase the .gconf (or rename/move) and let the system rebuild the gconf folder inside of the .config folder. As I said I don't know if this will work but as long as you make a backup I don't think it's dangerous to try.

Well , I'm sorry. I really thought that I had found something relevant to the bug.

Enable the repos in /etc/pacman,conf then update your system with pacman -Syu.  Any packages in the testing repos that are installed on your system will be upgraded to the testing version.

Re: numlock LED on keyboard switchs off when switching input methods

Like proposed, I created a complete new user and logged in for the first time with it, creating all new folders with default configs. Same problem: modifier keys turn the led off... :-(
