I have this card reader and can't seem to get it to work. According to reviews on Amazon, someone has it working in Suse and someone else in Ubuntu. The device is connected and has power, but I don't see any trace of it in dmesg or lspci, and it does nothing. I have it in the bottom slot of an Asus Crosshair V Formula motherboard. I am on kernel 3.8.10-1-ARCH. Can anyone help me track down the problem? Do you need more information? Thanks.

I found it in lspci as:
07:00.0 USB controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VL80x xHCI USB 3.0 Controller (rev 03)
The USB part of the reader works, but I'm not finding a memory card when I insert one. I do have the xhci_hcd module loaded.

My diagnosis:
-hardware failure, i'd try on other OSes or on other computers
-hardware incompatibility? though i doubt this one
-read manual
-ask-contact those suse/ubuntu users who made it work, cant be that much different from #arch

@roentgen -- Didn't do the trick. I have also tried with memory card inserted before boot and after with no success.
@ubunchu -- I will try an Ubuntu liveCD tomorrow. The manual is one page, mostly pictures and poor English. I may email support, but I'm guessing it will not be very productive.

and I get the same device listed, so I'm guessing they're actually the same device (sure look similar).
However, my USB does not work either. In windows both work. Any progress? I'm running Ubuntu 13.04.

The manufacturer response was that Linux is unsupported -- big surprise. I had no luck contacting the other Linux users who supposedly had it working. I can't say how it works in Windows because I have no way to test it. USB definitely works for me which I find odd. I haven't spent much time on this lately, but I would still love to see it working. Let me know if you come up with anything and I will do the same for you.

interesting, just got a response from HooToo support saying they were sympathetic and do indeed use the same chipset..in fact it seems like they're saying their tech team would discuss the chipset solution to get a linux driver working. So it seems like if we could get more information as to why it currently doesn't work they'd be willing to help with technical information. I think the first thing would be to track who wrote the VL80x xHCI USB 3.0 driver for linux.
