Specifically, the packages that were upgraded are:
systemd, systemd-sysvcompat, linux, perl-error, rsync and libxfce4utilBefore the upgrade everything worked according to expectations, but now only speakers work and when I plug in my headphones neither works.
Chip in question is VIA VT1708S and the card is HDA-Intel.
I have checked alsamixer to see if the headphones option was muted, but it seems everything is unmuted and the volume is at normal levels -- the ones that I probably left before.
Additionally, whenever I plug-unplug jack input, I hear a small cracking 'noise' (not loud, barely can hear it).
What should I do?
Thank you!

Try downloading the kernel and see if it works again.

It seems that a reinstall of Linux didn't do the trick.
Additionally, it seems as if the OS changes the hardware state of the card once jack is fully present; should headphone jack touch the sides of the input then headphones work in conjunction with speakers and if some kind of "Auto-Mute Mode" is de-activated in alsamixer.
I guess it's a step forward from having sound from neither of the outputs.

I had a typo in my post, it should have read "downgrading the kernel". If you still have the last version in your pacman cache try it else you can try linux-lts.

I think it's the HDA Intel card with the new linux 3.9.2-1 update. I've been having some trouble with the headphone jack thinking there are headphones in it. The problems seem somewhat related. A downgrade of the kernel should provide a temporary fix.
My issues are described here if you're curious: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=163208

I didn't have a cached package, but I downloaded 'linux-3.8.8-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz' from ARM x86_64 [core] and it solved the issue, thanks anonymous_user!
But this is only a bandage to the wound, I just have to hope future versions of Linux will not have this regression.
Marking as P-SOLVED.

I had the same issue. I found that after the kernel upgrade, alsamixer had two new items. "Speaker Volume", and "Headphone Volume." The level was very low, almost off. I adjusted these up, and it worked after that. You might give it a try.

This is a known regression in kernel 3.9, so hopefully it will be fixed in future updates. It likely will since according to this post I saw on the opensuse mailing list there's already a patch available: http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-kern … 00060.html

Looks like there's a working patch now that fully fixes the issue, so hopefully fixes make it into the kernel soon ![]()

Hi guys. I have the same problem and I would like to apply the patch. I don't have the time to understand how the arch build system works, so can someone give me a step-by-step instruction on installing the kernel patch?

2) Learn how to patch

I guess I should say I don't have time right now, but I would like to fix this annoying problem asap. But whatever.

Perhaps not being able to listen to music can provide you with the encouragement to try what you haven't even thought of doing, or haven't found a reason to do, before.

For what it's worth, kernel 3.9.6-X includes the fixes for intel HDA with VIA codecs, my headphones work again as intended.
