I have used Gnome for my entire Linux usage. Lately I have wanted to play with KDE. I have an issue that's go me stumped, though.
If I used GDM and launch a KDE session, sound works fine -- both "event" sounds and Flash/YouTube, VLC, etc. It uses the "Built-In Audio Analog Stereo" device. Now if I switch out KDM with GDM, the EVENT sounds work, but other sounds -- Flash/YouTube, VLC, etc. -- do not work any more. The "Built-In Audio Analog Stereo" device is also disabled and it falls back to a built-in digital something-or-other, or HDMI.
So I'm sue GDM is starting something to do with PulseAudio, but KDM isn't starting this same thing, right? How to I go about seeing what GDM is starting that KDM is not. (I read through the wiki on PulseAudio and didn't really find an answer.)
Also, both with GDM and KDM, the following are identical:
ps aux | grep pulse
