Horrible (video) performance with AMD graphic

Hello,

I have an AMD Radeon HD7700 card using the xf86-video-ati driver from the official repos. I used to use fglrx with which everything ran fine but wanted to try the OSS driver.

power_method is dynpm, no configuration whatsoever in the xorg.conf

The overall desktop performance is ok on KDE though I'm unable to activate OpenGL and have to use XRender instead. I tried to force OpenGL but it was slow like it was literaly be drawn by a 5 year old.

But video performance using VLC or SMPlayer is very bad. On VLC using standard output module as soon as I go fullscreen the video started to stutter and plays like slow motion...

Is thery something I can do about that or is it just the state of the driver?

Thanks!

What video output driver? Try xv, works very well. What's the resolution of your videos? I have a Netbook with AMD hardware and 720p h264 videos work fine, 1080p h264 videos don't run fluently anymore.

It's way below 720p, it's 640x352, 25FPS, XVID as an example video.

XVideo output does not produce any video output at all, sound works.

Ok, there's something terribly wrong with your setup! We'll need some logfiles to see what is wrong. Let's start with /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Here it is: http://pastebin.com/ULc5TL63 Some lines that may be a hint of a problem:

[ 5.497] (WW) RADEON(0): Direct rendering disabled
[ 5.497] (II) RADEON(0): Acceleration disabled

Output of dmesg | egrep "drm|radeon": http://pastebin.com/gTmtCMqh

[ 3.311836] fbcon: radeondrmfb (fb0) is primary device
[ 3.354706] radeon 0000:01:00.0: fb0: radeondrmfb frame buffer device

Is this intented?

Please tell me when I can provide anything else.

Re: Horrible (video) performance with AMD graphic

Its the state of the driver.

The OSS driver is not as rigid as the proprietary one.
Compiz is unusable with newer radeon cards 6000 onwards. But will work good with a 4870/4890 etc..

7700 is new and open source drivers is something i wouldn't recommend.

Neways, open drivers in gallium is not effective in powersaving features. Your card will throttle full to the highest clock speed. Proprietary drivers are feature rich for linux.

Re: Horrible (video) performance with AMD graphic

It's a pity....

I did a downgrade to xorg-server 1.13.3-1, xf86-input-evdev 2.7.3-2 and reverted to fglrx.
