Graphics card heating everything up

After having installed Arch, i realised that my fan was much more active, and my computer much more hot than it had been on Debian. With the help of lm_sensors and a bit of deductive logic (in Arch i have the open source driver, in Debian the proprietary. When my computer starts, sensors reports the cpu as cold, and then reports on subsequent runs the graphics card heating up, and only then the cpu. In Debian everything stays cold) i found the graphics card driver to be the culprit. After activating dynamic power management, as described in https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ati#Powersaving using method 1, the problem persists. What can i do to alleviate it?
