Speedtouch modem detected but won't connect

OK - following the wiki page I have installed the firmware and peers file necessary to start my ADSL connection but I am getting an error when i run pppd call.

The error is approximately:

connect(0.38) Address already in use

I googled but can't find much aside from it looks like it might be dhcp related - it was also suggested that you get this error if you have to such modems connected.  Wondering if my regular modem was being detected i tried that fix but no luck.  There is no ppp0 device listed in ifconfig so it's not already up.

dmesg seems to tell me that the modem firmware and drivers are loading fine.  It gives me a message about adsl syncing and up/down rates.

Of course I am a bit crippled by now not having an inet connection on my machine so posting configs is v tedious!

I added debug to the peers file and discovered that "No Auth" on chap was available - I was using pap.  I added my pap-secrets line to chap-secrets and it worked
