Last time I installed Arch, I had no sound problems. I just installed alsa-utils, opened alsamixer, raised the volume, and everything worked fine. This time, I'm not getting sound even after doing this. I've tried everything I can think of. The only problem I see is when I run pulseaudio:
E: [pulseaudio] pid.c: Daemon already running.
E: [pulseaudio] main.c: pa_pid_file_create() failed.

Since pulseaudio runs on top of alsa, then it is usually a good idea to get alsa working correctly first before setting up pulseaudio. If alsa is having issues, then of course pulseaudio is as well. One step at a time.

I thought pulseaudio just ran in the background. All I've done is install alsa-utils and raise the volume in alsamixer. I just thought the pulseaudio error was worth pointing out

The problem is that pulseaudio autostarts itself in many situations. So you need to not have it installed even when you are setting up your audio initially. That is of course, unless you don't yet have a working X, or are continuin configuration stricktly in the TTY, as the newest pulseaudio packages have been set up to only be run in the TTY if done so manually. So I would say that a message that indicates that pulseaudo is already running means that it is likely interfering with whatever it is you are trying to do.
