edit: I'm thinking that the cable maker put in all the pins for double link but actually it is only single link.
My system is:
- Sony F-series laptop
- Geforce 540M
- HDMI 1.4 to dual link DVI connector
- Dell monitor U2711
My external monitor has 2560x1440 native resolution. I don't have a problem using Ubuntu on my desktop, connecting with a dual link DVI cable. My laptop, on the other hand, won't let me add a mode above 1680x1050. Facts: HDMI >=1.3 supports this resolution. GeForce 540M supports this resolution. The monitor supports this resolution. So why the hell won't X let me add the freaking mode line?
First, I bought a pure HDMI 1.4 cable, but it turned out that Dell idiotically programmed the EDID file to falsely report the max resolution as 1080p rather than 2560x1400, which it supports, for all the people out there who would just explode if they didn't have plug & play monitors for watching TV. After that, I ordered an HDMI 1.4 to dual-link DVI cable. Now, the picture is clear (i.e. the pixels aren't stretched to fit the screen area), but its not outputting enough pixels. It's displaying only 1680x1050, bordered on all sides by a few inches of blackness. Also, nvidia-settings reports the native resolution to be 2560x1440, but it won't let me select or manually set that resolution!
I get the typical ambiguous X error:

I had the same problem: Couldn't add native resolution -- same X Error of failed request etc etc.
Found arandr from AUR. It's graphical a frontend for xrandr, except it works. Xrandr couldn't add that resolution, but arandr could...
Anyway, arandr has a neat feature of exporting the command that changes the resolution. For me it's:
xrandr --output VGA-0 --off --output DVI-I-1 --mode 1600x900 --pos 0x0 --rotate normal --output DVI-I-0 --off --output HDMI-0 --offWhile not a solution, you might want to have a look.
