Can't boot the installation disk

Hi,
I want to reinstall arch on my laptop,so downloaded the last iso torrent file and burned to disk. But when i try to boot arch from cd it's stack on acer logo on startup and can't boot.I checked md5sum and it's ok.I downloaded again and burned second disk but same problem.First i burned with xfburn, then with k3b.Then i try to burn on diferent laptop but won't boot either.
Something wrong with last iso file,or i did something wrong?
Thanks.

Re: Can't boot the installation disk

You say you tried burning it from another computer, but did you try booting it on that other computer?  Do you have any other bootable CDs you can try on the laptop?

Re: Can't boot the installation disk

I don't see any splashscreen, the logo is above the syslinux menu - do you see the menu?

Re: Can't boot the installation disk

Karol, I'm pretty sure the logo is referring to his systems POST screen - most often these are the hardware manufacturers logo.  This would be displayed regardless of whether there was any bootable media present.

EDIT: though this does raise a point: if the CD were not detected as bootable, it would not get stuck at the POST screen, it would either boot to the HD, or say there was no operating system found.  This computer does boot (to something) when the CD is not inserted, right?

Oh Jesus, I overdosed Arch - I saw 'Arch logo' even though OP wrote 'acer logo'.

Sorry for the noise.

Re: Can't boot the installation disk

I try to boot all three cd's that i have on other laptop and won't boot either. On my laptop only acer logo appears and it hangs there.
@Trilby When there is no disk in drive laptop boot to arch linux (my existing installation),when i put disk on drive it hangs on acer logo.

Re: Can't boot the installation disk

On my Thinkpad, I do experience a similar situation.  I have USB 3.0 and there is one USB flash drive that wil hang the POST screen if it is in the machine on boot (only the USB 3.0 ones though, as the 2.0 works fine).  When I take it out, the machine continues as if nothing happened.  So maybe it is getting hung up on the device itself, in that it is trying to read, but the optical drive is damaged somehow?

This is why Trilby asked you to try this several posts back (#2).  But since you then mentioned something about putting a disk in and it hanging, I figured you meant all discs.

Re: Can't boot the installation disk

Did you try only the iso through torrent?
I did a new install last week and used the iso downloaded directly from this site,
burned it with xfburn; had no problems

Re: Can't boot the installation disk

Yep, only through torrent. Just downloaded the iso from your link but i don't have black disk at the moment, so i'll try again later and post back here.
Thanks.

Re: Can't boot the installation disk

Using a torrent is the better option because it actually checksums the downloaded file for you.  When you use a direct download, I don't think most people actually check the md5sum like they should...

Re: Can't boot the installation disk

True, I never check the md5sum. Call me a lucky guy if you want, untill today I never experienced problems with iso's downloaded directly.

Re: Can't boot the installation disk

Hi,

there is wiki paragraph which mentions problems with UEFI-ready
ISO images and Apple machines.
  https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Un … t_from_ISO

The thread here mentions Acer rather than Apple. But maybe ...

To my discomfort as upstream of xorriso, the given command for
repacking the ISO image without El Torito for EFI is faulty
at least for my olde GNU/Linux with bash.
One will have to replace
  -output "~/archiso.iso"
by
  -output ~/archiso.iso
or
  -output "$HOME/archiso.iso"

> debian boots fine

debian-7.0.0-amd64-netinst.iso has El Torito for EFI too.
But it also has a GPT partition table, which is not present in
archlinux-2013.05.01-dual.iso. Maybe this makes a difference.

Would the archlinux image boot from USB stick ?
It has an isohybrid MBR and thus should be ready for machines
with BIOS.
(The Debian image is ready for BIOS and EFI from USB stick.)

Have a nice day :)
