EDIT: Well, I tried a frontend (KXMame) from AUR, and with that the games work fine. Still can't get XMame to run from the command line, though, but it's not a problem anymore...
Hi,
I can't get XMame to start, and I can't figure out why... The roms I've tried should not be faulty, since they work fine with Mame32.
Here's a sample output:

It's basically the same for any rom I try, except the .bin files are different, of course... The ~/.xmame folder exists, but contains no config files...

Hi,
I tried xmame a couple of years ago with no success either, so can't really help, sorry!
I found the best (ie fastest) way to run MAME was using the pure DOS version, as the system overheads were lowest. That introduces a few tricky things though with sound blaster settings, networking, etc.
Let me know if you do get it working!
Cheers

Maybe you need to create an xmame config file (eg /home/ben/.xmame/xmamerc) since it will not check the current directory. Then edit it to point to the location of your ROM and other files.
xmame -sc >~/.xmame/xmamerc
vi ~/.xmame/xmamerc

As I said, I got it working using the KXMame frontend from AUR... But of course that has the additional baggage of needing kdelibs installed. Meaning it's more of a workaround than a solution... (I already had kdelibs because of other programs that require it, so it wasn't an issue for me...)
And yeah, it may well be that config files are the root of the problem. But, since I have it working now by other means, I just can't be bothered to check into it...

It looks like kpiche is right, you don't have configuration files, and mame can't find your roms. You should try to create the config file as said before, and modify the "rompath" option.
You can also try to launch xmame with the -rp option followed by the path where roms are.
