Somehow ubuntu got ahold of a new version of broadcom-wl that works with the bcm4331 chip!
The source is available from ubuntu, but I haven't had any luck getting it to compile.
I've been looking at this blog post - the comments are pretty helpful, but I'm still failing to compile with:
make[2]: *** No rule to make target `/home/*/Downloads/bcmwl-6.20.155.1+bdcom/src/shared/linux_osl.o', needed by `/home/*/Downloads/bcmwl-6.20.155.1+bdcom/wl.o'. Stop.

Why not use the broadcom-wl package from the AUR? That is what I use... it is maintained by one of the Arch devs, so it is of great quality. There are a couple patches included in it to enable it to compile on the newest of stable kernels, which is probably why you are having such poor luck.
Oh an BTW, the source is available from broadcom... not sure why you would go get it from ubuntu.

FYI this page says b43 supports bcm4331 since the 3.2 kernel release.

I would, if only it supported my wifi card (bcm4331)
The one an aur is version 5.100.82.112-12, while the one I linked is 6.20.155.1.
And I don't think the new version can be found anywhere accept with ubuntu, which I agree is really weird. From the posts I read it looks like canonical complained to broadcom and got them to make a special version to support the newer wifi cards.

b43 is practically unusable with the bcm4331. There's no -N network support, its difficult to connect to networks, and when they do connect, they often drop soon after.

The newer version of Broadcom's driver has been in the AUR for a few months: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/wire … 3142-dkms/ .

I only checked the broadcom-wl package, that's great, thanks!

Don't forget to mark the thread as [Solved] by editing the first post.
Sorry I was totally unaware of this new version of the broadcom wl module. I have been using the 5.100.* with great success with my bcm43228. So ubuntu complains about incompatibility, so broadcom makes an ubuntu specific update wtf?! I don't know what bothers me more, the fact that broacom made it ubuntu specific or the fact that ubuntu seemed to take it as is without any effort to contibute it back to the greater Linux community. Its like they said "Suckers! Ubuntu has moar modules!"
