Using a standard installation of rxvt-unicode and aur/python-powerline-git, the Powerline symbols are displayed as boxes.
In my `~/.Xdefaults` I've tried both using the fallback font method:
URxvt*font: xft:Consolas:size=13, xft:PowerlineSymbols:size=13
and the patched font method:
URxvt*font: xft:Monaco for Powerline:regular:size=10
But neither works.
I've checked, and urxvt is compiled with `--enable-unicode3` by default. Can anyone give me any pointers?

Here is my config for urxvt. Working perfectly with Powerline and w3m image viewer for RangerFM.
Maybe you could use it for your needs.

Thankyou! Using the `Inconsolata for Powerline` font has got things working at last! (after having tried Monaco and Inconsolata-dz)
URxvt.font: xft:Consolas:size=13, xft:Inconsolata for Powerline
