I'm installing a new Arch system. I did an FTP (base) install, starting with the Arch 7 CD. Everything installed fine and the computer booted to a login prompt. I confirmed the network is running, and successfully pinged the network gateway.
I went to upgrade the system with a pacman -Syu, but pacman reports it can't sync. A pacman -Sy gives the same.
This machine uses a static address, and ifconfig returns values that appear to be correct. I don't have that in a form I can post here.
What am I missing?

Check if your pacman.conf is OK. You can also try using another mirror. Can you access the mirrors with a web browser?

you can ping your gateway, but can you ping outside the gateway, say google.ca. Can you ping an url and see if DNS is functioning?

I tried to ping a URL, with no success. I changed my eth0 in rc.conf to use dhcp, and now I can ping out and pacman works.
I've set up machines before with a static address, and didn't run into this. I haven't done the research yet to see what's different this time.

probably the problem would be in your resolv.conf, as a hint.
