[SOLVED] 97% slower downloads after sleep, sometimes after booting

SOLVED: The problem was most likely caused by a temporarily malfunctioning router. It was just a matter of unlucky timing that the issue didn't show itself on Windows and initially seemed to be related to suspend to RAM on Arch.

Update: The speed just dropped without putting the system to sleep after reboot. It now persists even after shutting down the system. (There is no other Wi-Fi traffic that could be the cause.)

Here's what I do:

  • Reboot.

  • wget http://mirror.nl.leaseweb.net/archlinux/core/os/x86_64/linux-3.9.8-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
  • See that download speed is around 1400 KB/s.

  • systemctl suspend
  • Resume.

  • wget http://mirror.nl.leaseweb.net/archlinux/core/os/x86_64/linux-3.9.8-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
  • See that download speed is around 40 KB/s.

  • netctl restart wlp2s0-my-network
  • wget http://mirror.nl.leaseweb.net/archlinux/core/os/x86_64/linux-3.9.8-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
  • See that download speed is around 1400 KB/s.

This happens regardless of the server. For example I also tried: http://speedtest.london.linode.com/100MB-london.bin

Before and after suspend to RAM, the Wi-Fi is connected at 36-48 Mb/s.

Wi-Fi card is an Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205.

Here's what packages I have installed:

  • Linux 3.9.8-1

  • systemd 204-3

  • linux-firmware 20130610-1

(An old, similar post with another Wi-Fi card.)

This problem doesn't seem to occur on Windows.

iwconfig wlp3s0 power off

do you have some app to save battery

i think it set wifi card to save power when going to sleep

try to do iwconfig before and after sleep, post log.

also post dmesg log

Re: [SOLVED] 97% slower downloads after sleep, sometimes after booting

Please note my little update above because the problem just occurred directly after reboot and could no longer be fixed by reconnecting the Wi-Fi.

iwconfig wlp3s0 power off

This makes no difference whether on or off.

Yes, laptop-mode-tools 1.63-3. The problem occurs even when it is disabled.

i think it set wifi card to save power when going to sleep

try to do iwconfig before and after sleep, post log.

iwconfig output is (practically) the same before and after sleep:

          Mode:Managed Frequency:2.462 GHz Access Point: 00:15:0C:F5:9A:1B

          Power Management:off

Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:5 Missed beacon:0

also post dmesg log

I hope these are all relevant parts (otherwise I'll post more). This is the output directly after booting where the problem was already present:
