low color depth in openoffice2

hi,

I'd like to use a light color gradient as a background for my openoffice2 impress slides. Unfortunantely the gradient has very visible lines and the colors are noticeably off, too, so I suppose openoffice uses a lower color depth. The image I used looks fine in gimp and most image viewers and when I export the impress slides as a pdf file it looks fine, too, but I'd like to embed some movies in the slides so I'd rather not use pdfs but openoffice directly. The built-in openoffice gradients have the same quality problems, by the way.

Does anyone know how to increase the color depth openoffice uses for display?

Does anyone know how to dither an image (preferably using the gimp but other open source tools are fine, too) so the effect is not as noticeable? (This might even be the better solution as it is more "portable".)

Thx for your help,
Florian
