Webkit based browsers not rendering web pages properly

-firefox and chromium work fine
-first time trying uzbl and luakit, used midori before.

luakit
midori
uzbl

$ pacman -Qm
cairo-ubuntu 1.12.14-2
firefox-nightly 25.0a1-1
fontconfig-ubuntu 2.10.2-4
freetype2-ubuntu 2.5.0.1-4
i3-git 4.5.1.106.g8867198-1
profile-sync-daemon 5.36.3-1
transmission-svn-gtk 14128-1
ttf-ms-fonts 2.0-10
xf86-video-intel-git 2.21.12.12.g6c8b15d-1

I have no idea how to approach this problem.

Re: Webkit based browsers not rendering web pages properly

Try downgrading gnutls to 3.2.1-1 and see if that restores the Arch Wiki CSS...

Works now.
May I ask what was the thought process behind that recommendation ?
Also should I submit a bug report ?

Re: Webkit based browsers not rendering web pages properly

I just looked at pacman's log for the last updates, and gnutls was the obvious candidate.

It does seem like a bug.

Re: Webkit based browsers not rendering web pages properly

FWIW I was just hit by this too.  Thanks to both of you - downgrading gnutls fixed it right up - I'll have to keep an eye on that bug report.

edit: that's not a report ... was this reported yet?

Re: Webkit based browsers not rendering web pages properly

Trilby: are you using a proxy? I am just wondering how many factors, other than gnutls, are involved here.

I'm on x86, using privoxy on all my affected boxes.

And yes, with a little more info this should be opened on Flyspray.

I just noticed this too.  I guess I hadn't restarted my browser for a while...

I found this though, just in case anyone is interested. https://bugs.archlinux.org/index.php?do … k_id=36212

They released my bug report from needing moderation status to their developer list. As well, there's also another Archer that posted there (sbfreak?). Hopefully gnutls sees this as something that they did as apposed to a libsoup problem. The interaction between libsoup and gnutls has always been problematic and even recently has had page loading randomly failing.

** EDIT **

Make that three other Archers. Damn, we're all there...

Did I miss it somwhere, or is there a link to the upstream bug report?

It's reported upstream, their bug report email forwards to the developer's mailing list;

Re: Webkit based browsers not rendering web pages properly

You know what's really odd about this? If I have gnutls-3.2.1 installed and use dwb to search DDG for "test this", it comes up with a bunch of hits. If I have 3.2.2 installed, it comes up with a single definition that does not appear with the other version. In fact, the only hits I can get with DDG are definitions that do not appear with the older version of gnutls. There's just something not right about this.

*** Try it. I'm too lazy to take and post screenshots at the moment. ***

Anyway, I may try to bisect the git code to find the offending comit. Or, I may just finally stop fighting with webkit based browsers and use something less buggy; which, incidentally, is all other browsers.

Re: Webkit based browsers not rendering web pages properly

When I have gnutls 3.2.2 I just get completely blank pages with anything from DDG.

As for all other browsers ... you mean firefox?  (Or internet explorer!?)

Wow, you don't see the definition thing? Curious. Even more curious is that "test this" pulls up something from Clojure, which I work with.

I don't really want to change browsers as I'm very fond of dwb. But, there are endless problems with webkitgtk based browsers that simply don't exist in Firefox or Chromium. Massive memory leaks, crashing on sites, and poor interaction between different versions libsoup and gnutls, are all common and persistent issues.

I'm in the same boat -- I really enjoy `luakit' but it feels like I'm playing russian roulette when opening/loading a new page as it may abruptly crash and lose all my tabs.  I find myself saving my session almost obsessively.  It's very irritating as I don't want to downgrade WAY back in libsoup/gnutls/webkit versions to something I remember as "stable".  Just wish there were similar [yet less buggy] alternatives in the world of web browsers.

Re: Webkit based browsers not rendering web pages properly

It is really strange. luakit does display everything (webkitgtk2 1.10.2-7), dwb does not (webkitgtk 2.1.2-1, self built)

Re: Webkit based browsers not rendering web pages properly

I have been quite happy with webkit, but I was always worried as more and more open source browser projects started converting to it.  Having alternatives allows for healthy competition and drives imrpovements.

Now it seems it's either webkit or firefox (chromium is webkit, isn't it?).  Firefox has always felt rock solid - it's just one darn big rock.  I've often looked into the Gecko API considering a luakit/dwm/surf style browser based on Gecko - but every time I quickly realize that it's either not very feasible or beyond my abilities.

Google forked webkit in the form of blink. Chromium was already far more stable with their changes than webkitgtk2 has ever been and now they've taken it to a whole new level. I'm kind of wary about Google in general, but since everything that I do is being monitored by the government of this country, I may as well just jump on board.

Re: Webkit based browsers not rendering web pages properly

There is a new version of gnutls in the repos... hopefully this will fix the problem.  (new version is 3.2.2-2)

Edit: Well, the wiki works!  It's looking like its fixed!

3.2.2-2 still doesn't quite do it for me. I'm using luakit on an i686 machine. No proxies nor particular tidbits from the computer out to the network that would hinder anything, save the router's firewall (but I highly doubt that would be the issue here).

I also have an issue with weechat, weirdly enough; I run all my irc servers through the same BNC, but 2 out of 5 connections fail, saying that decryption failed. 3.2.1-1 is still the preferred version for me.

Re: Webkit based browsers not rendering web pages properly

I'm seeing a similar issue with nzbget.  Downgrading to gnutls 3.2.1-1 works for me; neither 3.2.2-1 nor 3.2.2-2 work.

The glib-networking testsuite fails, too.

... TEST: connection... (pid=19079)

Downgraded gnutls 3.2.1-1 works for me too (with suckless' surf) but just discovered another glitch:
90% of bandwidth used for downloading, 10% kept for browsing - set in rtorrent. If I write a mail and I click on the send button in gmail, the browser abruptly closes itself. If there is no download in progress gmail works fine.

Has anyone seen this beside me?
