Sharing /var/cache/pacman/pkg

To avoid repeating the same pacman -Syu upgrade for multiple machines on a LAN, is simply mounting

/var/cache/packman/pkg

of one PC at the same mount on all the others sensible? ie to centralise the downloaded package repository.

Or is there a good reason for not doing this?

That makes perfect sense, imho. No reason it shouldn't work...
