radeon kernel paging error

hi,

few weeks ago, my wm started to freeze.

it (probably) seems that this happens while chromium is trying to run some flash related stuff.

i've looked into message logs and found this:

Re: radeon kernel paging error

I am facing a very similar issue when using google-chrome-beta (37): display turns off, keyboard & mouse become unresponsive. Audio is not disrupted, however. I haven't seen this behavior outside of Chrome but I will update if any other applications seem to trigger this problem. dmesg reports segfault and radeon errors. Any help is greatly appreciated...

Re: radeon kernel paging error

Hey, does this only happen with Chrome and Flash? Maybe it's this general crash bug. I'm suspecting it has something to do with Mesa 1.2+.

Re: radeon kernel paging error

For me these daily crashes only started after the update to Mesa 10.2.5 (on a Radeon R7 240).  Mesa10.3-devel is also crashy, so now I've downgraded to Mesa 10.2.4.

Re: radeon kernel paging error

I will try downgrading mesa when I get home. Thanks for the heads up.

I think it's flash specific but I need to do more testing. I mostly ran into the problem when using Google Play Music.

Edit: I am going to try catalyst-total package alongside the mesa downgrade. Will post results as soon as possible.

Re: radeon kernel paging error

No, this also happens with regular HTML 5 video in Chromium, not just Flash. Particularly fullscreen video. But I've also encountered this freeze when closing a terminal window in Gnome 3 because Mutter uses OpenGL compositing.

Also, WebGL content in Chromium (e.g. from Chrome Experiments) has triggered this Radeon bug for me.

Re: radeon kernel paging error

Info: Tried downgrading to Mesa 10.1.4 but no OpenGL anymore. According to the bug report this is the last reported non-crashy version. Here my post.

Re: radeon kernel paging error

Yep, 10.2.4 just crashed too. :-(

Well, this sucks. I think I will install Catalyst tomorrow.

P.S. Yay, the downgrade to Xorg 1.15 was successful. So I'm running catalyst-total from AUR now.

Re: radeon kernel paging error

You should have tried Mesa 10.1.4. But as I said I don't get it running with OpenGL support in X-Server (my forum thread). Maybe someone here has an idea about this issue? All details in my post linked above.
I really want to use the free driver because Firefox' experimental OpenGL layer rendering works with it and hence butter smooth scrolling.

Re: radeon kernel paging error

I don't know about scrolling, but as long as WebGL works in Firefox and Chromium, I'm happy. Various VLC playback problems (image distortions in overlay mode and stuttering without overlay) are also history now with Catalyst. So far, so good. smile

Re: radeon kernel paging error

About GPU accelleration in Firefox:

about:config → set to true:

layers.offmainthreadcomposition.enabled
layers.acceleration.force-enabled
layers.async-video.enabled (optional)

If in list, set to false: layers.use-deprecated-textures

Test the start with:
env MOZ_USE_OMTC=1 firefox

Check with about:support
Should tell: "GPU Accelerated: Windows 1/1 OpenGL (OMTC)"

If it is working write to ~/.profile:
export MOZ_USE_OMTC=1

But with a big if. This got me a white window under Catalyst on Radeon HD 7770.
About stuttering with VLC under radeon (after mouse scrolling but if you scroll two more times it goes away): It uses radeon's VDPAU interface and there seem to be a couple of small bugs. But with Catalyst it can't use any hardware acceleration at all and reverts to full CPU decoding. Catalyst only has the XvBA interface no player can use (beside an outdated patched XBMC version in AUR) and the wrapper scripts to VDPAU and VA-API don't really work (just Flash gets good VDPAU acceleration). Furthermore, with radeon GStreamer can finally play without massive frame drops in Firefox. So there are a lot of benefits in radeon and 'only' the crash bug that seems related to Mesa 10.1.4< is the downside.

I don't see any frame dropping in Firefox and playback in VLC looks nice and smooth in overlay mode, however this is done internally. Also, the new rendering pipeline in supertuxkart-git finally works on high settings without crashing. (I still don't see any shadows, but at least it runs now.) So I think Catalyst on Linux is better than people think. It has come a long way since getting thrown out of the Arch repos in 2009. Having to block xorg and kernel updates is a little annoying but much better than application or computer crashes.

P.S. Aha, with the latest supertuxkart-git shadows now work too. Ooh, nice! smile

Re: radeon kernel paging error

Hey, my system is running nearly crash free for two days now with Linux 3.17 RC1. The crashes were related to VLC and VDPAU and something got stuck but my system feels pretty stable now. Compile linux-mainline from AUR and try for yourself.
(When you are at it, add "-march=native" to /etc/makepkg.conf for optimized compilation and you should tell it your real core number.)
I will report further stability!

Re: radeon kernel paging error

Hello all.

I wasn't able to rebuild my system as originally intended - I ended up swapping some hardware and building Arch again to keep things fresh. The video card is still the same:

I'm happy to report the following combination of packages are working for me with no bugs:

xorg-xrdb 1.1.0-1
xorg-xset 1.2.3-1
xorg-xsetroot 1.1.1-2

I used a xorg 1.15 mirror as suggested in this article:
[xorg115]
Server = http://catalyst.wirephire.com/repo/xorg115/$arch

[jambii@macht ~]$ pacman -Q | grep catalyst
catalyst-hook 14.9-11
catalyst-libgl 14.9-10
catalyst-utils 14.9-10
lib32-catalyst-libgl 14.9-10
lib32-catalyst-utils 14.9-10
[jambii@macht ~]$ pacman -Q | grep mesa
lib32-mesa 10.3.0-3
lib32-mesa-dri 10.3.0-3
mesa 10.3.0-3
mesa-dri 10.3.0-3

Mesa was originally installed version 10.2.8-1 (as a dependency of catalyst-hook i believe);  it's been upgraded to 10.3.0-3 and fortunately the issue is still not recurring.
this time around, I used proprietary drivers from vi0l0's repo (another reference to https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AMD_Catalyst ...)
[catalyst]

my xorg.conf, generated from aticonfig --initial for one monitor:

[jambii@macht ~]$ cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Section "ServerLayout"
        Identifier "aticonfig Layout"
        Screen 0 "aticonfig-Screen[0]-0" 0 0
EndSection

Section "Module"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
        Identifier "aticonfig-Monitor[0]-0"
        Option "VendorName" "ATI Proprietary Driver"
        Option "ModelName" "Generic Autodetecting Monitor"
        Option "DPMS" "true"
EndSection

Section "Device"
        Identifier "aticonfig-Device[0]-0"
        Driver "fglrx"
        BusID "PCI:2:0:0"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
        Identifier "aticonfig-Screen[0]-0"
        Device "aticonfig-Device[0]-0"
        Monitor "aticonfig-Monitor[0]-0"
        DefaultDepth 24
        SubSection "Display"
                Viewport 0 0
                Depth 24
        EndSubSection
EndSection

hmm...what else...I do not have 'nomodeset' in my kernel parameters, which also seems relevant
I hope this helps anyone troubleshoot if they have a similar issue as the one I originally described. I've been able to stream flash content in google-chrome-stable without a problem so far... no more lockups and random black screens.
