Media Server Software for TV and multimedia streaming

Hi there.....

Does anyone know of a good multimedia server software that will transcode and stream audio/video as well as TV?

I've been researching quite a bit and found a lot of different projects; the best being MythTV and VLC.

The catch however, is that MythTV doesn't transcode and stream information... instead it relies on a client. Though it is uPnP compatible meaning that if my research serves me well, anyone with a multimedia enabled computer or iPhone/Android can interface with the software. - This kind of fits my needs and am more inclined to go with this setup.

However, VLC actually transcodes content before streaming out meaning that even my Blackberry can get play the transmissions.

Basically I was wondering if there was something like MythTV that could also transcode to stream like VLC but also be headless and more on the server side rather then player??

The hardware I will be using is compatible with V4L and V4L2... meaning full support :-) Just incase anyone is wondering: Hauppauge WinTV HVR 1900 with Composite input as well as TV input. It is external as the chassis I'm using doesn't have any provisions for PCI slots since it's NAS based however, does have enough room for a nice juicy i3-7 or Xeon E3 CPU :-)

So... is there anything that will 100% fit my wish list or is MythTV going to have to suffice?

If your hardware support UPnP, you could use Plex or PS3 Media Server. Plex is much more versatile but closed source. Both of these solutions can transcode on the fly.

In my opinion ps3mediaserver (pms in aur) is most universal and doing the best work with any smart tv. It is very simple to use

PS3 Media Server looks good, however, can it stream live tv like MythTV does? - I'm talking about using a TV tuner card (like I mentioned above).

So effectively can you watch live TV with it or live composite input?
